"Machu Picchu", Peru - Trip Detail

Day by Day Itinerary

Departure Day - (Thursday)
Depart for Lima, Peru. This is usually an evening flight and arrives the following morning

Arrival Day - (Friday) Acclimatize!
Arrival into Lima Peru. From Lima it is a short 2 hour flight up to Cusco. The usual arrival time into Cusco is late morning before lunch. Once in Cusco you will be greeted by the MBA staff that will take you immediately to your hotel. The rest of the day will be spent sipping tea made from coca leaves and cruising around the centuries old town of Cusco - very cool place!

Day 2 - (Saturday) 40km
Today is the first day of riding. It will be a casual ride but because Cusco is in a valley it will be a 500 meter (1,500') climb right off the bat - ouch! And with the lack of oxygen you'll be feeling it! Today we will check out all the ruins in and around Cusco such as Pisac, Tambomachay, Sacsayhuaman, Puca Pucara and Quenqo as well as some of the smaller ruins hidden back in the hills and accessible only by animal trails (aka singletrack!). At the end of the day we will be back at the same hotel in Cusco for one more night before we start our 4 day journey to Machu Picchu the following morning.

Day 3 - (Sunday) 60km
This morning we will load up the vehicles for a short drive out of Cusco and down into the Sacred Valley to the town of Pisaq. Here we will jump back on the bikes and start the morning off with a cool ride along the Urumbamba River to Calca following singletrack. After lunch we start climbing out of the valley followed by a free ride down a rough mountain road until we reach our camps pot for the night - natural hotsprings! Here we will set up camp and enjoy our first night camping outdoors in Peru.

Day 4 - (Monday) 80km
Third day of riding - out of the Andes and into the Amazon we go! Today is an easy 80km ride downhill until we reach a small town where we will camp again for the night for our second and last time. At this point we have dropped some major altitude and with the 3 previous days at 13,000'+ we are all feeling like superman!

Day 5 - (Tuesday) 100km
Fourth day of riding. Today we continue along the same bumpy jungle road until we reach the town of Quillabamba. Here we will crash at the Quillabamba Hotel and have a beer or two beside the pool!

Day 6 - (Wednesday) 50km
Fifth day of riding. Today we load up the vehicles and head out for Ollantaytambo - gateway to Machu Picchu. We will drive about 100km which will take us back up and over a 14,000' pass to the town of Tastayoc. From here we'll head off road into the mountains using animal singletrack to guide the way again. It will be up and down for a bit after which it's a sweet 50km decent through many hidden Inca ruins into Ollantaytambo. Once we arrive in Ollantaytambo we will be relaxing at a very comfortable hotel and checking out the local ruins.
Day 7 - (Thursday) Machu Picchu Ruins
Today will be a rest day and the trip up to Machu Picchu! We will jump on the train bright and early for the scenic ride along the Urubamba River and arrive into the town of Machu Picchu a couple of hours later. From the base town it's a 20 minute bus ride up the mountain - or if you wish you can hike it! It's pretty spectacular the first time you see the ruins. From the top there is a footpath that leads up and over into the entrance and this overwhelming view hits you all at once - absolutely unbelievable! After spending several hours taking a tour of the ruins and for those who still feel energetic, you can summit the sacred rock of Huayna Picchu - another 2 hour climb up! At the end of the day we'll take the train back to Ollantaytambo for the night.

Day 8 - (Friday) White Water Rafting & Riding
Today we jump in the rafts and blast down the rapids of the Urubamba river for the morning. After lunching in the town we will be heading off to town of Maras where we will mount up again and ride some sweet singletrack over to the ruins of Maray and then down through the salt mines to Urubamba. After the ride we will jump back into the vehicles and head back to Cusco for our last night together and the customary last night bash!

Day 9 - (Saturday) Going Home!
Today is our last day as a group in Peru. We will pack up the bikes and gear first thing in the morning and get ready to head off the airport for what are usually morning flights back to Lima. From Lima you will connect on what are customarily overnight flights back home. If you have decided to stay on in Cusco for an extended holiday, we can arrange accommodations or help you get somewhere else you may be headed.

Arrive Home Day - (Sunday)
